CLV smear

Not sure if anyone's still on this newsgroup, but I'll give it a go:

Did anyone ever determine definitively what actually causes CLV smear on
the players that exhibit it? I saw one theory that it's to do with the
high frequency compensation circuits that are required for infrared
lasers, but others have asserted that some players with infrared lasers
lack the smear.

I'm just curious if anyone has worked out what the cause is, and so go
some way towards finding a possible fix.

The author of ld-decode once speculated in a conversation with me that
it's the result of pre-emphasis added during the decode stage to
compensate for CLV-related bandwidth loss.
