Discussion:
Dual system NTSC/PAL multi LD player with LD-G?
(too old to reply)

Dear Friends,

Greetings!

Does anybody of you know of any dual system NTSC/PAL multi LD player
(at least with CD, CDV, and CD+G) but with LD-G playback as well? It
appears that most LD players with LD-G playback are NTSC-only. Well,
this has some logic behind it as LD-G discs are only availabe (or
manufactured) in Japan where the NTSC system is the standard. However,
it would still be nice to play NTSC LD-G discs plus regular NTSC and
PAL discs.

Before I continue, please don't believe that I haven't done my work,
for I have found one example of such a player, the Pioneer DVL-V888
(and the DVL-K88). Now I ask you for your help, could you please tell
me of any other models?

Most cordially,

Carlos Albert Lacayo

P.S.: Before I am asked about it, yes, I find LD-G discs useful,
particularly in the case of karaoke.

No, it does not exist for regular players. European Players (315 PAL only,
515 or 925) were too old to have met the LD-G technology.

I don't know if LD-G could have been possible for PAL. But in a way it was
not needed: we already got TELETEXT on some titles, up to 8 different
subtitles if I remember correctly.

CC is one channel only.
LD-G was supposed to be up to 8 too but I've never seen a disc with more
than 2 and my LD-S9 will only allow me to select LD-1 #1 or #2 (or none).

So, not talking about regular players, KARAOKE enhanced players are another
world and were targetting restaurants/bars (I've seen some recently in some
Chinese restautants in Paris). But I have absolutely NO IDEA of the quality
of these players!

Yes, Julien, but if I understand correctly, TELETEXT LD's can be read
by any PAL LD players hooked up with PAL or Multistandard TV's. Then
again, are there any Karaoke or Music Videos LD's with TELETEXT?

Unless I am watching a video clip or karaoke in a foreign language by
a foreign artist (aside from Spanish), my interest in LD-G is only to
read subtitles in English; sort of CC, I must add.

Actually, the DVL-919 and the DVL-919E are also dual NTSC/PAL players
with LD-G capability. Though the image quality of these Pioneer
players are not the absolute best within the Pioneer LD line, these
are still top-notch.

Hello,
Do the combo players you've mentioned below play PAL laserdiscs, PAL DVDs,

Hey, Scott!

Greetings!

All of them play LD's and DVD's, though mainly the European versions
play both PAL and NTSC LD's and DVD's. Then again, the DVL-919, black
color, which is the US and Canadian model, plays both PAL and NTSC
LD's and DVD's. The UK and European model, gold color, which is the
DVD-919E, plays both PAL and NTSC LD's and DVD's. There is also the
DVL-919, gold color, Hong Kong and Japanese model, but I think this
one is only NTSC. It is interesting to note that the UK and European
DVL-919E has a different set up of buttons, that is, frontal buttons
on the machine; on the other hand, the Hong Kong and Japanese DVL-919
has a different remote control.

About the DVL-V888, black color, this one plays PAL and NTSC DVD's but
only NTSC LD's; I think this is a US model. I don't know if there is
an European model capable of playing both PAL and NTSC LD's, but there
might be such a machine. I am not sure about the DVL-K88, black color,
Japanese model, but as I have heard this is the DVL-909 plus karaoke,
I imagine it plays PAL and NTSC DVD's but only NTSC LD's.

I hope all this information proves to be useful to you.

Thank you Carlos,

As it turns out, I still have one black DVL-919. Hmmm...

No mention of anything PAL anywhere. Region 1 DVD only. Perhaps there is
more than one kind of black US DVL-919. This one is my second DVL-919. The
first didn't mention PAL anywhere either. I've never had PAL LDs or PAL
DVDs to check it out, though. The DVL-919 menu system doesn't mention PAL
output either.

Hello, Scott!

I see. Doesn't your machine read "Both PAL and NTSC", or is it
something else? If so, then I misunderstood that part, for there is a
black machine that reads "Both...".

I don't understand the logic behind the DVL-V888 model that reads PAL
and NTSC DVD's but no PAL LD's. I mean, the interesting part is being
able to read PAL and NTSC LD's, for dual NTSC and PAL DVD players are
everywhere (or can be easily modified).

If your LD collection is mainly NTSC, I assume that you don't collect
music videos on LD's. That is because it appears that most PAL-only
LD's without NTSC counterparts are music videos (I am not sure about
TV-only shows on LD's, are there many PAL-only?).

Best regards,

Hello Carlos,

The DVL-919 stock photos all plainly show the word "BOTH" ... on the front
left of the player, but when I use a magnifying glass to read the rest of
the words, my player says "SIDE PLAY" in tiny letters. On the right, where
the European model says PAL / NTSC, mine has no lettering.

You correctly pegged me as just a casual collector of music discs. I have
perhaps 50 or so, but over 2000 movies and such. I don't think any of them
are PAL. I don't have a PAL TV either, so my motivation to buy then try a
PAL DVD in the 919 is only academic. When I saw your post, I thought my old
dog could do some new tricks that had been overlooked.

Actually, it is (or it was) relatively easy to upgrade a NTSC LD
player to play both NTSC and PAL discs. I remember having read about
this (on Usenet and on actual ads) some years ago. However, now it
appears to be harder and harder to find a technician who can help with
this work. You see, I am trying to do this kind of modification with
my CLD-V2800, but I am not getting any E-mail responses from
companies. I even posted a message here asking for help, but again, no
one was kind enough to post information.

This thread is VERY old, but then so is my newsgroup feed.

Here's the real answer.

The DVL-919 has 3 variants.

DVD-919 - Black (US & Canada). NTSC only on both DVD & LD
DVL-919 - Champagne - Japan, NTSC only, but with LD-G
DVL-919E - Champagne - UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, etc. -
NTSC/PAL playback on both DVD/LD. Still Region coded for the country.
Region Free mods will play ANY commercial LD (except MUSE) every
pressed. NTSC Analog & Digital, PAL Analog & Digital. Must have the
correct TV monitor - won't do PAL->NTSC conversion (or vice-versa).

The DVL-909 from Eurpoe plays NTSC & PAL DVDs, but only NTSC LD.

Only players for the Japanese market have LD-G built in.

Technically, the LD-G system was capable of 16 channels. I've only
ever seen 2 used.

Let's just say that we can afford to take our time. Not too many folks are

In looking through some of the web sites out there, it would appear
that some of the Elite models were availalbe in other countries, under
various model identifiers. Some of them are champagne in color. I
don't see any that actually had the "Elite" badge on them.

For example, the LD-S2 in Japan was called the LD-X1, and is visually
identical to the S2, but without the "Elite" marking.

Blaine,

small correction for your (very good) summary about the different
DVLs:

The DVL-909E (Europe model) plays PAL and NTSC LDs, and PAL and NTSC
DVDs straight from the factory. This includes output of DTS sound from
DTS LDs. LD-G is not supported on this model. DVD region freedom and
support for DTS on DVDs need a mod.

Hello Group,

I have to correct Blaine Young and others regarding the playback
capabilities of the DVL 909/919 models.

The correct list is:

DVL-909/919 Black (US & Canada): NTSC only on LD, PAL/NTSC on DVD (note 1)
Elite DVL-91: (US & Canada): NTSC only on LD, PAL/NTSC on DVD (note 1)
DVL-909/919 Champagne (Japan): as US/Canada plus LD-Graphics (Note 2)
DVL-909/919E Champagne (Europe, Australia and so on): PAL/NTSC on BOTH LD
and DVD. No LD-G. (Note 3)
Hongkong/Singapore models equal the Japanese versions, apart from the DVD
region code.

Note 1: Technically these players will play any PAL DVD, but PAL DVD's don't
exist in region 1. After a multi region fix they will play any PAL DVD.
Output is true NTSC or true PAL, no conversion of NTSC to PAL60.
Note 2: These players are region 2, and will play region 2 PAL DVD's without
modification.
Note 3: These players can output NTSC video in the PAL60 format on both NTSC
DVD and NTSC LD playback. None of these players can convert true NTSC to
true PAL or vice versa. In theory they can output Component video on DVD
NTSC playback (not on LD), but they lack the necessary connectors.

After a multi region fix on a Japanese or US player, they will NOT play PAL
LD's. The reason is they have a different LD video board and a different LD
mechanism controller compared to the full PAL/NTSC models for
Europe/Australia. Multi region fix on 909's and the Elite DVL-91 is the
simple solder blob modification, 919's require a firmware change.

Elite DVL-91 and 919's have DTS digital out on DVD, most but not all 909's
can be modified to provide DTS digital out on DVD. All players output DTS of
DTS-LD's.

US/Canadian non LD-G players can in theory be converted to LD-G capability
by replacing the LD video board and changing the firmware to the Japanese
version. PAL/NTSC LD capable models cannot be converted to LD-G due to the
different LD video board compared to NTSC LD only models.

Final conclusion: there is no possibility having one player capable of
PAL/NTSC playback on both LD and DVD and having LD-G as well.

Source of info: Pioneer service manuals and importing black US models for
use in the European market.

Hello,
Do the combo players you've mentioned below play PAL laserdiscs, PAL DVDs,
or both???
Hey, Scott!

Nico,

this is the best summary of 909/919 features I ever came across. Kudos
for that. Unfortunately we cannot make this thread a "sticky", but I
just saved your excellent statements to my local harddrive.

Hello Group,
I have to correct Blaine Young and others regarding the playback
capabilities of the DVL 909/919 models.
